Well. [ a pause, as he absently swirls the drink in his glass, thinking. ]
I think I want to hear what Law has to say about why he chose to go after Douman. I suppose a hunch doesn't really sit well with me as a reason to go after someone, but I'm hesitating on my judgement until I've had a little more time to talk through the details with him.
[ ... ] And... well. What do you think, about the theory that Douman could've killed Omi? That seemed to be our last lead.
[ . . . . . he sighs as he lets his arms fall on the counter, his head coming to rest on it. he closes his eyes and just - starts talking.]
... I suggested to Law-san last week that I had a theory that Kaan-san's murder and Starphase-san's murder was related. I talked to Vira-san about it during trial, but basically when you consider motive and ability, the only people who could've matched the footprints of Yi-kun's shoes would be Ashiya-san and Yi-kun. Then you consider Yi-kun's testimony of his feet feeling pinched. True or false? I thought it was true, because I want to believe in him, and because it'd also make more sense. So Ashiya-san, because of the toblerones, the connection, and a couple more pieces of evidence.
Ashiya-san might've killed Omi-san.
But I want to know why Aoi-san and Shi-san were cursed. Them being cursed was the only reason why we thought that someone besides Ashiya-san could've killed Omi-san. If we find another explanation - like someone Law-san trusted wanted to prolong us from finding him a bit longer - then we can comfortably assume Ashiya-san killed Omi-san.
So that's what we have to figure out. Find the source of the curse, then come to our conclusions.
[he's so tired, but he's clearly been rattling this around in his head for a while]
[ it does make sense. gu yun watches mineo flop over and listens to him, propping his chin on his hand. ]
I'm glad that's been bothering you, too. [ mineo's got a good instinct for this sort of stuff, so, gu yun trusts his judgement. ultimately, he's a little puppylike, but he's respectable and good at his detective work, so. gu yun takes his opinion thoughtfully, taking a sip of his drink. ] I think your theory about it being an Avatar power is likely correct, though... if it wasn't, how many powers did we not have accounted for? There were eleven groups total, and one group that didn't get anything. 32 people, minus three is 29... so, seven powers out there if they're in groups of four, or eight, if there's a group of three. Each one had a particular sort of name - "Aphrodite" was a goddess. Oliver Twist is a book in the library. I have absolutely no idea what ours is. [ VINES ]
So, perhaps if it's not an Avatar gifted power, then we might be looking for another god or goddess name - if there's thematics, since the "aphrodite" power can clearly affect two people at a time. Of course, it could be gifted, and then that wouldn't matter at all.
[ these avatar powers really do put a damper on things... ]
I do wonder if that person would've come forward, at the end, since Law did mention having people who would help cover for him.
If it really was for Law-san, I think that it's enough to want to protect him. But it's not enough to put their neck on the line, their name attached to a power, for him. Since we'd be looking at them then, if they were the one who could've killed Omi-san. I think... it's something we have to investigate carefully outside of trial now.
But I'm pretty sure it's an unlisted power given by an Avatar. One you have to ask to receive.
That seems likely. Those boons have expirations on them, just as much as the ones we receive for participating in those odd little events do - I had one, my first week here, but I didn't use it, so it expired.
[ sometimes you get nice things! ] From what I've heard, we can only have a maximum of two at a time, as well - at least, the ones assigned through our devices.
Maximum of two at a time, if you get an offer for a different one, you can pick which ones you want to keep. But they're otherwise unlisted, and I'm pretty sure Avatars can give away different ones.
Definitely a pain. [ he snorts, to that, soft and humorless. ]
I believe people who commit a killing and get away with it get some sort of special reward, as well, though I couldn't get a confirmation on that. [ being nosy eventually just met him with "go kill someone and find out" which he was not about to do, so. here we are. ]
.... there's no way to ask someone unless they confess to us, right? And I don't think that anyone's exactly going to walk up to me and announce that kind of thing.
[mineo is so many things. he's a bleeding heart. he's empathetic. he's understanding.
he's also incredibly focused on finding killers during trial and wouldn't be surprised if that impression puts people off.]
The point of us being here is to indulge as much as possible to achieve our desires, right? And, supposedly, murdering others is a pretty large form of indulgence, one this place clearly encourages. [ considering the whole trial system. ] The more you do that, the faster you get to your desire, so why not reward a killing with the tools to kill again? Or perhaps, even tools to protect yourself?
[ gu yun taps his fingertips against the bar, thoughtful. ] It's only a theory, but I was trying to think of how anyone could possibly get their hands on a poison out of the blue. It could possibly tie into your theorized connection between Kaz and Steven, as well.
... I think there's a lot of theories rolling around. But we need to get them confirmed in order to really make progress - at least the Avatars tend to give pretty resounding no's when we're off-base, from what I've seen. So we just... gotta figure out what's a 'maybe' and what's a 'yes'.
Poison depends. People have been getting stuff from home, so maybe they got it there. Or they went to the garden and they've been trying to extract poisonous plants and we haven't really been noticing. If it's premeditated enough, it's not impossible.
When I received an item from home, I spoke with the Avatars about it - and, specifically, I asked about something that I was hoping to obtain, because I knew it wasn't particularly large - and if we earn 'bonuses', then something like that might suffice. To others, that item could have been poisonous, and in many ways, it is to me, as well. [ he does have "self-poisoning" on his profile, after all. ] My purpose for using it would've been for myself.
...But the answer was that it was unlikely to obtain, at least in the way I obtained the first trinket from home. [ so. ] We ought to check the garden for poisonous plants, though. I'm usually good at detecting it by scent, and I couldn't pick anything up off of what was there, so, it would've had to have been odorless, and I imagine likely tasteless as well.

[he listens thoughtfully to that, before nodding quietly]
.... probably. We can look around. I think it's better if we just start comparing notes on stuff like that. There's a lot of theories... so it's easier if we just start knowing what other people are up to.

Like if someone was able to get away with it the first time, so they got a reward, and then that reward was just for another murder?
