DNA is... well, it's what you're made up of. The genetic data that makes you... you. If something like a hair or the killers blood is found at the scene, their DNA can be sequenced from it and potentially matched with someone.

I can tell you that we do catch those who kill in my time, but not through those methods. Though... I'm not sure how much the latter would've helped us, today.
