That thing saps that same energy from the Avatars on Fridays - she described it as 'chewing on them'. It doesn't kill them, but continues to feed off of them, and they recover, only for it to repeat. It also punishes them.
...Though, I suppose, if it caused the Avatars to transform, it could do that to them.
